☁️ OpenAI signs $300 billion cloud deal with Oracle LINK
  • OpenAI reportedly signed a contract with Oracle to purchase $300 billion worth of compute power, with the five-year agreement scheduled to begin sometime during the year of 2027.
  • This deal continues OpenAI's strategy of diversifying its cloud providers beyond Microsoft Azure, a move that also includes a recent agreement with competitor Google for more compute power.
  • The timing aligns with OpenAI's involvement in the Stargate Project, a $500 billion investment with SoftBank and Oracle to build new domestic data center projects over the next four years.
🛰️ Starlink plans to become a global carrier LINK
  • Following a deal to buy radio spectrum from EchoStar, Elon Musk suggested Starlink could become a global carrier, offering users a single solution for home broadband and direct-to-cell service.
  • The plan requires SpaceX to launch new cellular Starlink satellites while phone makers add support for the 1.9GHz and 2GHz bands, a process that could take about two years.
  • Industry analysts and AT&T's CEO remain skeptical, noting the acquired spectrum is likely not enough to replace terrestrial networks in dense cities, making partnerships with existing MNOs more plausible.
🤖 China's R1 robot challenges Tesla's Optimus LINK
  • Chinese tech company Ant Group is showing its new R1 humanoid robot, which was recently demonstrated cooking shrimp for audiences at the IFA 2025 tech show in Berlin.
  • The company is testing the R1 in community centers and restaurants, suggesting future uses for the bot as a caregiver in healthcare or as a robotic tour guide for travelers.
  • However, a video from the event shows the robot placing a box on a counter at a glacial pace, and the company has not provided a price or launch date yet.
🚀 SpaceX to fly bigger, fully reusable Starship in 2026 LINK
  • SpaceX plans to demonstrate Starship's full reusability during 2026, a milestone that includes delivering over 100 tons of payload to what Elon Musk calls a useful orbit.
  • This goal relies on the Block 3 design, which adds next-generation Raptor engines, an upgraded transfer tube, and a new aft dome fitted with metallic heat shield tiles.
  • The schedule includes one more Block 2 test in 2025 before a sub-orbital flight of the redesigned Block 3 vehicle, which is planned for the early part of 2026.
🤝 Vimeo to be acquired by Bending Spoons for $1.38 billion LINK
  • Italian mobile application developer Bending Spoons announced its plan to acquire video platform Vimeo for $1.38 billion in an all-cash deal, expecting the transaction to close by Q4 this year.
  • The acquiring company’s chief executive said he is planning ambitious investments across Vimeo’s business, from its creator-focused tools and enterprise offerings to its responsible AI-enabled features.
  • The Milan-based firm has a pattern of purchasing struggling companies like Evernote and WeTransfer, then laying off numerous employees and scaling back services available to free users.
🚁 Uber is adding helicopter and seaplane rides LINK
  • Through a new partnership with Joby Aviation, Uber will integrate Blade's helicopter and seaplane passenger services into its app for booking flights as early as 2026.
  • When the service launches, users can book Blade flights directly through the app, either by-the-seat on scheduled trips or by deciding to charter an entire flight.
  • Blade currently offers its passenger services in the New York City area, the Hamptons, and South Florida, with flight routes also in Aspen, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.
